Standing proudly amidst Devonshire countryside on the edge of Exmoor National Park, these three holiday properties are set within their own extensive 22-acre grounds and gardens, which include a lake. The owners have lovingly restored the properties to their present glory and they are well placed for easy access to the main A361, from which North Devon can be easily explored.
Dating back to around 1816, Snurridge House (H89) is an imposing and impressive detached house. It offers guests a rare opportunity to stay at one of the finest Regency properties in England. Locally it is fondly referred to as ‘The Doll’s House’ due to its appearance. It is reputed that Snurridge House was originally commissioned by Lord Fortescue of Filleigh Estates for his mistress at the time, whilst he remained in residence at Filleigh House just a short distance away! The property commands fine views of outstanding surrounding countryside from its elegant windows. The Granary (HLLE) is a converted barn to the left of Snurridge House, whilst Snurridge Lodge (HLLG) is a single-storey converted barn set at the back of Snurridge House, ideal for those with mobility problems. Both have been decorated and furnished to a very high standard and have wonderful countryside views.
South Molton (2 miles) offers weekly farmers’ markets, pubs, restaurants, antique and curio shops, an indoor swimming-pool and other activities. Barnstaple is only 11 miles away, with its theatre, cinema, shopping centre, indoor leisure centre and weekly pannier markets. Situated just a couple of miles from the ‘Gateway’ to Exmoor National Park, the properties are well placed for exploring the surrounding area. Exmoor National Park has much to offer, with delightful scenery, and is a must for keen walkers, bird-watchers and nature lovers – sightings of the native Exmoor ponies or red deer can often be witnessed.
For beach lovers the fantastic ‘Golden Coast’ beaches of North Devon’s famous and dramatic coastline can be found within 20 miles, and Saunton, Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe should not be missed for fine surfing or just lazy summer days out. The popular resort of Ilfracombe is within easy reach and offers a small harbour, fishing trips and cruises to Lundy Island, whose shores shelter a rich variety of birdlife, including the famous puffins after which Lundy is named. Offshore, grey seals can be seen all the year round. Taunton is within easy driving distance and boasts a 12th-century castle which now houses the County Museum, two important 15th-century churches and one of the country’s biggest cattle markets.
