Cycle routes can also be explored along the Manifold, Tissington and High Peak trails, a series of waymarked footpaths which follow the course of disused railway tracks.<br />Places of interest not to be missed when touring out and about include the great country houses of Chatsworth and Haddon, the bustling market towns of Leek, Bakewell and Matlock Bath, with its cable cars scaling the Heights of Abraham, the vast recreational lake of Carsington Water (where sailing, canoeing, fishing, and bird-watching opportunities abound), the heritage sites of Wirksworth, and the delightful spa town of Buxton with its fine opera house, which plays host to the famous Gilbert and Sullivan Festival during the summer months. For a truly peaceful day out, there is some wonderful walking to be found amid the gentle valleys of Dove Dale, while for a fun family day out, Alton Towers is within easy reach. Those seeking an altogether different outdoor experience can make their way to The Roaches, an area famed throughout the land for its excellent rock climbing. Ashbourne &lsquo;Gateway to the Derbyshire Dales&rsquo; offers a selection of antique shops and restaurants, a regular market day and a gingerbread shop where delicacies are made to a recipe allegedly passed on by Napoleanic prisoners of war.
